In the North American market, the 2.0-liter CVH, 2.0-liter Zetec-E, 2.0-liter Zetec-R, 2.3-liter Duratec, and 2.0-liter Duratec were the chosen engines. For example, the Zetec-S, Zetec-SE, Zetec-Rocam, Zetec-R, Duratec HE, and Duratec St were all used in the European market. The engines used in the first generation of the Ford Focus differed depending on if the cars were European or North American models. Since this was the only diesel engine, it was susceptible to having a higher Ford Focus engine replacement cost. In the first generation of the Ford Focus, the only diesel engine available was the Endura TDDI, a 1.8-liter inline-4 diesel used in the Focus, Escort, Fiesta, Mondeo, Orion, Sierra, and Transit Connect. First sold as a Zetec-S, then a Zetec-SE, and now named a Duratec, this engine was produced for Ford’s smaller models – like the Ford Focus. The Zetec-S unit, also known as a Ford Sigma, is a straight-4 engine first introduced in 1995. The Zetec units, also known as the Ford Zeta engine, was a straight-4, double overheated internal combustion engine produced in the late 1980s. Gasoline engines were available in the 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter Zetec units from the Ford Mondeo and the 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter versions from the Zetec-S units.
